1. Jesus’ death under the might of the Pharisees and Sadducees was allegedly during the festival of Passover. Other major festivals of the Jewish New Year and Yom Kippur, the solemn Day of Atonement are not mentioned in the Synoptics.
Midrash: This record is a direct link to the image of the paschal lamb. The lamb was brought for sacrifice in the Exodus story. Just as the angel of death had passed over the land Herod the Great had passed over Israel. In the Exodus recall this was the final plague on the Egyptian authorities and was identified as the death of their firstborn child.
The Ancient scribes wanted to preserve their pedagogical teaching and always described current events in the same terminology. By the time the gospels were written Roman over-lordship had again raised its ugly head and Jerusalem had been destroyed. The scribes wrote up their story of 40-70 years prior when after persecution (described as crucifixion) by their governance (religio-civil combination) had overwhelmed their community (taxes, movement from rural to city, poverty, illiteracy of 90%, bondage to authority). Ascent, which is an inherit right, began to descend and had symbolically killed their first born. Many thought they were a predicted messiah having truth.
In the Exodus story by placing the blood on the doorposts of their homes, the firstborn of their children would be saved, or spared thus ensuring the intrinsic and innate triumph of good over bad, the spirited being, construction over destruction, making over unmaking, ongoing atonement.
